I feel that midsommar is deeply horrifying, to me it represents the dangers of looking at another culture or subculture uncritically to the point where you assimilate into a community that contradicts your own values, just because it seems idyllic on the surface. Not to say that you shouldn't respect and value other cultures, but ompletely romanticising and idealising another country without understanding it is not respectful in my opinion. It's also about falling prey to toxic people who take advantage of your vulnerable mental state, the film's characters were charmed by a performative friendliness I've experienced for myself.

Its funny how people think shes been truly liberated/happy or that they want to feel this same catharsis (shes being indoctrinated into a cult. Of course, she smiles—shes let go and gotten rid of everything that would make her ‘Dani. Everything about her—her life, her experiences, her boyfriend—she hated it in the end. Shes only “free” because shes not a real person anymore. Shes a face, and a body, and an illusion of contentedness, just as the Harga cult intended her to be. She is covered in colorful flowers here whereas normal society was dark, bleak, filled with shadows. Thats the point of a cult. You have been made promises (family, favors, stability) for your self-identity in return. To me, the most horrific moment in the film was Danis smile. The implication of her dissolution as a person with self-identity was terrifying. She chose what made her feel like she was someone, not knowing their intention was the complete opposite.
